Why Every Busy Working Mom Should Self- Care by Keeping That Hair Appointment (Without Feeling Guilty)

Have you ever looked at your calendar, seen your hair appointment, and immediately thought, I should probably cancel it.

The kids need new shoes.

The laundry is piling up.

Dinner still needs to be planned.

Work has been overwhelming.

Someone has baseball practice, another has homework, and the baby needs your attention.

As moms, especially full-time working moms, we become experts at putting ourselves last.

I know because I've been there.

I'm a full-time school secretary, a wife to a hardworking tattoo artist, and a mom to two young boys and one baby girl. My days begin before sunrise and often don't slow down until our wild tiny little feet have finally fallen asleep. Through the hustle and bustle of each day, just trying to implement an exercise routine is challenging and sometimes non-existent. There have been countless times when I felt guilty spending two hours at the salon because I convinced myself there were more "important" things to do.

But I've learned something that changed my perspective.

Taking care of yourself isn't selfish.

It's stewardship.

You Can't Pour From an Empty Cup

We hear this phrase often, but it holds so much truth.

When we're constantly giving—to our jobs, our spouses, our children, our church, and everyone around us—we eventually become emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted.

Then the little things feel overwhelming.

We're quicker to lose patience.

We're emotionally drained.

We stop recognizing ourselves.

Sometimes, sitting in a salon chair isn't just about getting your hair done.

It's about finally exhaling.

It's about having someone care for you for a little while.

It's about drinking a coffee while it's still hot.

It's about reading a book, listening to a podcast, or simply enjoying the quiet.

It's a reset.

Your Hair Appointment Is More Than Vanity, it's Self Care

For years I thought self-care was something I had to earn.

"If I finish everything on my to-do list..."

"If the house is spotless..."

"If everyone else is taken care of..."

The problem is...

A mom's to-do list is never finished.

There will always be another load of laundry.

Another meal to cook.

Another mess to clean.

Another practice to drive to.

If you wait until everything is done, you'll never give yourself permission to rest.

Looking in the mirror and feeling refreshed isn't about vanity.

It's about confidence.

It's about remembering that you're still a woman—not just an employee, chauffeur, chef, scheduler, referee, and caretaker.

You matter too.

Jesus Rested, Too

Even Jesus stepped away from the crowds.

He withdrew to pray.

He found quiet places.

He rested.

If the Savior of the world made space to recharge, why do we believe we have to run ourselves into the ground?

God never asked us to carry every burden perfectly.

He asks us to come to Him.

Sometimes that looks like opening our Bible.

Sometimes it looks like taking a walk.

Sometimes it looks like sitting in a salon chair for a couple of hours while someone washes away more than just your roots.

Your Children Are Watching

One of the biggest reasons I keep my appointments now isn't just for me.

It's for my kids.

I want my sons to grow up respecting women who care for themselves.

I want my daughter to know she doesn't have to feel guilty for taking care of her mind, body, and heart.

I want them to see that healthy boundaries matter.

That rest matters.

That moms matter.

We're teaching them with every choice we make.

Give Yourself Permission

So, if you're thinking about canceling your next hair appointment because everyone else needs something...

Don't.

Let someone else make dinner that night.

Order pizza.

Ask your husband to handle bedtime.

Fold the laundry tomorrow.

The world won't fall apart because you took two hours to breathe.

In fact, your family will likely get a happier, calmer, more refreshed version of you.

And that's a gift to everyone.

A Little Reminder for the Working Mom

Friend, your worth isn't found in how exhausted you are.

You don't earn the title of "good mom" by neglecting yourself.

You are allowed to rest.

You are allowed to refresh.

You are allowed to take care of the woman God created you to be.

So, self-care by keeping the hair appointment.

Drink the coffee.

Enjoy the scalp massage.

Leave feeling like yourself again.

Because a healthy, peaceful mom blesses her family far more than a burned-out one ever could.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is simply take care of yourself.

And you never have to apologize for that.
